WCA Student Wins Reading Challenge

WCA Student Wins Reading Challenge

You don’t have to ask Nahomi Alonso Luna what she likes to do best in school. The Wimauma Community Academy student would have to put a book down to tell you – it’s reading! And that diligence in reading was rewarded recently during a reading challenge.

During the 2024 Spring Break, Hillsborough County Students were challenged to read for at least 100 minutes on the myON® platform. myON® is a student-centered, personalized digital library that gives students access to more than 7,000 enhanced digital books in the core collection. Different titles are matched to each individual student’s interests, grade and reading level. For this contest, each student who succeeded in reading for at least 100 minutes was entered into a random drawing where Nahomi and 29 other county students won a new tablet.

Nahomi, a third-grade student at RCMA’s WCA, is an avid reader and mathematician, and participates in the Gifted Program and the RCMA Dual Language Program. Of all her school interests, reading is her favorite.

“The reason I like to read is because it’s interesting,” she said. “I like to learn lots of things. It amuses me.”

Melissa Saez, who is Nahomi’s English language and content area teacher, had even more praise for the gifted student.

“Nahomi is a superb student,” she said. “It amazes me how much she loves learning and takes the initiative to educate herself on topics that she is interested in. I am so proud of her and I know that she will go on to do amazing things in the future.”
