One of the more popular after school programs at MCA is the Chess Club. Ten students in kindergarten and first grade make up the inaugural Chess Club at MCA. Though they’ve only played the game for a short time, they are showing the rest of the local chess community that the Mulberry Monarchs are a force!
Recently, the team received recognition for their outstanding performance at a chess tournament, sponsored by Polk Scholastic Chess. The team earned second place in the Guppy Division. At a separate event, the team placed third out of eleven teams, and first grader Justin Martinez Trejo placed eighth out of 79 players!
Special thanks to Brenda Alvarez-Lagunas, the afterschool program director, the team coach Rosalinda Rosales, and volunteers Freddy Bautista and Christian Cortes for their dedication to our kids. Thank you!
