Last week, five WCA scholars got the chance to visit the Florida State Capitol for some hands-on experience in how the wheels of government turn. The scholars were selected based on their academic excellence and were interviewed before getting the opportunity to meet Representative Melony M. Bell. During the visit, the scholars presented a mock bill in a Senate hearing proposing that gum be allowed in schools. The bill received three votes in favor and one against. The visit provided the scholars with a better understanding of the legislative process, and an opportunity to represent their community and share their perspectives with elected officials. They returned home with a greater knowledge of how the government works and their role in shaping policy. The gum legislation is still being debated!
