One couple built a village to support RCMA

Farringtons receiving their award

More than 20 years ago, Karen and Ed Farrington saw people in need and decided to help. Their commitment filled hearts and homes, affecting those who directly benefited as well as friends and neighbors who joined the Farringtons in their quest.

The Naples couple had traveled to Immokalee one day and were surprised to see the living conditions of many residents there. Because they lived in a new development, IslandWalk, they realized that neighbors who were moving in had too much furniture and other household items. So, the Farringtons began taking these donations to Immokalee in their SUV.

The IslandWalk community was so generous with items, the Farringtons enlisted friends with SUVs and even a realtor, who lent his box truck. Ed made frequent trips to Immokalee and beyond, connecting with RCMA for distribution to families in need.

Karen also purchased books and toys at garage sales, for children of migrant families.

As they realized the positive impact they were having, the Farringtons routinely held toy and back-to-school drives for RCMA, and they hosted the children at holiday parties in IslandWalk’s clubhouse.

Their dedication has made such a difference in the lives of so many.

“Ed and Karen Farrington have come to the rescue of the parents by bringing toys and treats for the children when it looked like they would have nothing,” says Jenneyfa Rich, long-time coordinator of our Booker T. Washington Child Development Center in Moore Haven. “They always make their visits a happy, fun time for the children and staff. We appreciate their generosity very much!!!”

RCMA presented a crystal award to the Farringtons during their latest visit to our child development centers in December.

As the IslandWalk community continues the Farrington’s work under the leadership of Fran Esposito and Laurie McGrath, RCMA wants to thank this couple for all of the ways they improved the lives of children and families in Immokalee. Their dedication has inspired IslandWalk to continue this support that will impact generations to come.
